History
MS Frontier Reinsurance Limited, Bermuda was established in 2002 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited, Japan.
For more than 400 years the Mitsui and Sumitomo groups have operated as two independent conglomerates.
The Mitsui Group was founded by Takatoshi Mitsui in the late 1600’s who opened Japan’s first money exchange in Tokyo in 1693.
The Sumitomo Group was founded by Masatomo Sumitomo who began the company as a store selling medicine in 1630 and later delved into the copper smelting business. This gave the Sumitomo family the ability to rise to the top of the copper mining and refinery industry until the late 1800’s when the company began to enter into other industries such as banking, warehousing, electric cable production and more.
In 2001, the Mitsui and Sumitomo groups merged becoming the second largest non-life insurer in Japan.
